In my thoughts expresses my state of mind, two forces that are in constant war with each other – yin and yang, light and dark, feminine energy and masculine energy, and positive and negative thoughts all in the same environment. This is Balance.
Fridah Ijai (b. 1995) is a Kenyan visual artist based in Nairobi. She recently attained a bachelor’s degree in Fine Art from Kenyatta University.
In my thoughts is a figurative acrylic painting that embodies a free yet vulnerable female body, mind, and soul. Through intentional metaphoric signs, texts, and figures, the artist develops a form of expression that grants her the freedom to address her audience one-on-one regardless of her presence.
“My work focuses mostly on human figure study with a bit of my style. My paintings can be viewed as my reaction to stereotypes and misconstrued perceptions of women in society or they can play an important role in creating awareness of the challenges they encounter. Also, they can encourage women and emphasize the importance of them raising their voices.”
