Nairobi Cool Waters I & II by Sheila Bayley (Kenyan)
We each play a role in this life and the bigger picture, spanning in the element of who we are individually and how it reflects the bigger part of society.
The idea behind this body of work is functionalism: the theory that all aspects of a society serve a function and are necessary for the survival of that society. Every single brush stroke represents some form of our connection as humanity, and its purpose. I drew my inspiration from Nairobi, a very complex and unique city where I was born and raised. From my experience, my idea was connecting different factors, which led me to ask questions like “Who am I?” “Where am I?” “Where should I go?”
We each play a role in this life and the bigger picture, spanning in the element of who we are individually and how it reflects the bigger part of society.
